A ‘second chance’: An oak tree thought to be extinct has been discovered in Texas | Environment

Somewhere on the steep, pathless hills of Big Bend National Park, under the sweltering Texas sun, a singular tree stands out from the rest. At least for people who know what they are looking for.

His chances of survival are slim. The oak tree, standing stoically about 30 feet tall, is fire-scarred and likely suffering from a serious fungal infection.
