The China Science and Technology Association (CAST) on Monday released the country’s 10 most important life science advancements in 2021.

Among the other advancements on the list, a study on the synthesis of starch from carbon dioxide stood out.

Chinese scientists have developed an artificial method of synthesizing starch from carbon dioxide, the first of its kind in the world. The promising study should help realize the production of a starch workshop and provide a new technical route for the synthesis of complex molecules from carbon dioxide.

Other key advances include studies on interspecific infection and coronavirus transmission, adjuvant treatment of locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the water-land evolutionary pathway of vertebrates, the pathway to de novo domestication of wild allotetraploid rice, climate-related flyway changes and memory. based on long-distance migration and morphological diversity of single neurons in molecularly defined cell types.

Among them, studies on the transmission of the coronavirus have established an effective assessment method to recognize the interspecies transmission of the coronavirus. By assessing the potential risks of origin of the bat and pangolin coronavirus, scientists have discovered that there are potential risks of interspecies transmission between different coronaviruses, so it is essential to continue monitoring the zoonotic coronavirus.

In addition, adjuvant treatment of locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma offers a novel treatment for cancer with long-term, low-dose oral administration.

According to the results of clinical studies, the use of this new method after radiation therapy can significantly reduce the risk of treatment failure by 45% and the incidence of serious side effects by 60%, with a completion rate of 74 %. The studies set a new global standard for the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma, which is the international leader, highly effective, low toxic and straightforward.

CAST has compiled this list every year since 2015.
