With a growing number of climate change reports signaling a “red alert” for the planet, the need to protect biodiversity and natural capital is intensifying. As the problem grows in complexity, the role fintech can play in identifying solutions is increasingly being explored.
A new NFT initiative attempts to do just that. EndangeredNFTs, a new NFT startup, puts animal conservation at the heart of its mission. The new project focuses on protecting populations of some of the world’s most ecologically, economically and culturally important species, whose survival is threatened by poaching, illegal trade and habitat loss. The company’s mission is to conserve nature and reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth. The net proceeds from each NFT collection could be the difference between the disappearance of iconic endangered animals and their successful preservation.
Credibility and transparency
When choosing which endangered species to support, EndangeredNFT conducts a thorough due diligence process to identify key partners. Each NFT collection of endangered species is always launched in partnership with an international NGO recognized for its conservation efforts and work to protect that species. This ensures that proceeds from NFT sales are used in the most responsible way possible and that every dollar raised is spent ethically in support of endangered species. The exact distribution of proceeds from NFT sales is public information and is embedded in the smart contracts used to launch the tokens.
First NFT collection in partnership with Rhino Momma Project
The massive increase in rhino poaching has made waves around the world, as it becomes increasingly clear that unless drastic measures are taken, future generations may very well know the rhino as an extinct creature.
Mohamed Amine Belarbi, one of the 4 founders of the project said: “Taking action requires innovative ideas and ingenuity, and this is what inspired us to collaborate with Rhino Momma Project on the launch of the Rhino NFT collection. . The sale of this unique NFT collection will make a significant difference to the growing number of rhinos in Namibia as over 90% of all sales go directly to fund conservation efforts championed by the Rhino Momma Project.
Each NFT sold depicts a unique rhino with stunning artwork so buyers can proudly display them. NFTs also come with a 3D model of the animal that members can upload to the Metaverse.
Because buying helps make a difference in Rhino preservation, Rhino Momma Project is offering amazing perks to NFT holders, like a free stay at their lodge or ranch so buyers can see and interact with the Rhinos that they save. Additionally, purchasing an NFT grants holders access to a members-only channel where they can get content updates (videos, images, live streams) about the Rhinos they help save. so they can see the impact of their purchase.
People can start shopping for Rhino NFT’s first limited collection on OpenSea on April 1, 2022, as well as visit the collection’s Metaverse exhibit on Spatial.io
About the Rhino Momma Project
The Rhino Project Momma purchased its very first rhino in September 2011; a five-year-old rhinoceros bull they named Cédric. Looking for a mate, they bought a white rhino cow with a heifer calf (female) at a game auction in May 2012. It was at this point that they fell in love with rhinos and have decided to help save this iconic species from extinction by breeding as many as possible, in an attempt to repopulate Namibia and Africa with rhinos. They turned to John Hume in South Africa, the world’s largest rhino breeder, to see why his breeding program is so successful and to gain the knowledge to avoid making costly mistakes, then they continued to build their breeding stock with purchases through December 2015. So far, from January 2013 to March 2022, 124 calves have been born on their reserve.
Their goal is to continue breeding these magnificent animals in an attempt to repopulate Namibia, Africa and hopefully the rest of the world. They currently have the potential to calve an average of 18-21 calves per year. They hope to build their capacity to produce more than 30 calves a year.
