The film cemented Arnold’s status as a leading man and was a perfect balance of suspense, action and horror. Similar to Prey, The Terminator depicts a hunter stalking his prey. However, in the case of The Terminatorthe hunter’s abilities are far superior to anything experienced by the human race thus far.

Alien (1979)

From the original Alien movie, Ripley wearing a space helmet and the xenomorph.

Extraterrestrial is considered the major work of director Ridley Scott. Scott, who is considered a sci-fi visionary, made the film simple in nature. A crew aboard a space tug find themselves on an unknown moon, but the stakes quickly turn deadly when they come face to face with an aggressive and deadly alien stalking them one by one.

What did Extraterrestrial so powerful that a sci-fi/horror movie was the element of ignorance, with the Xenomorph still lurking in the shadows. This is also seen in Preywhere the hunter is camouflaged.

Jurassic Park (1993)

Tyrannosaurus attack in Jurassic Park.

A film with a story and digital effects that still hold up to this day, jurassic park remains a timeless classic for any cinephile. Plus, with five more movies making this a franchise, it doesn’t look like these dinosaurs will be going away anytime soon.

Jurassic Park’s dinosaurs reflect the alien in Prey for several moments. During the first half, Raptors and Yautja both act as silent and stealthy assassins. However, during the second half of both films, the “tanks” become the focal point as the Yautja becomes bloodthirsty and sustains several injuries, similar to the rampage caused by the T. Rex.

I Am Legend (2007)

I Am Darkseeker Legend Will Smith as Robert Neville

I’m a legend follows Robert Neville, a gifted scientist who is a survivor of a man-made plague that turns humans into mutants that feed on blood. Neville wanders a post-apocalyptic New York City, aimlessly calling out to other survivors through various means. However, when night falls, Neville becomes the hunted.

The film explored the psychological aspect that humans face when grief, regret, and anger are prevalent. Neville suffers from PTSD due to the event causing the Extinction, and several flashbacks are shown during the tense moments. Similar to Prey, the protagonist realizes that something is wrong at first. The two protagonists study everything that pursues them and both become overconfident, which eventually leads to them being trapped or cornered.

The Mega (2018)

Jason Statham in The Meg

The mega centers on a group of scientists exploring the Mariana Trench who unknowingly release the largest marine predator that has ever existed, the megalodon. Starring Jason Statham, Bingbing Li and Rainn Wilson, the film shows the 70ft prehistoric shark in full force.

Despite the shark’s gigantic size, the film delivered suspense and dread. With young Yautja in Prey, similarities to size and stealth are prevalent throughout the film. The tribe has never encountered a hunter with the size and speed of this one, and their stealth ability makes it nearly impossible to detect its location.

Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Nemeis in Resident Evil Apocalypse

Resident Evil: Apocalypse picks up where its predecessor left off, as Alice and her crew must evacuate Raccoon City before a nuclear bomb is detonated, killing the undead. However, they are not alone as they encounter a mutant named Nemesis.

The Nemesis was practically designed and stood approximately 7.5 feet tall, weighing over 370 pounds. Similar to the Yautja species in Prey and Predator, they are physically superior in every way. The Nemesis and the creature in Prey mimic each other mostly as tanks, while other Yautja species prefer total stealth, this alien took the full brunt of gunfire, explosions, and booby traps as it drove through, as in all scenes featuring stage the Nemesis.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

Cage at the end of Edge Of Tomorrow

edge of tomorrow takes place in the future where most of Europe is occupied by a violent alien race. The film’s main protagonist, Major William Cage, is forced to join a landing operation against aliens where he finds himself experiencing a time loop.

The chemistry between Blunt and Cruise is a highlight of the film, as the duo battle the alien race and train together, forming a union while being aware of the time loop. The great inferiority of human technology is remarkable in Prey. It takes trial and error to find the alien’s weakness, however, the two protagonists ultimately use the alien’s advanced technology against them.

Jaws (1975)

Jaws walked up to a swimmer on the movie poster.

The shark movie that started it all, Jaws revolves around a giant great white shark that prowled the waters of Amity Island. When reports confirm the shark is responsible, Chief Police Captain Martin Brody (played by Roy Scheider) begins to track down the culprit by placing a bounty.

When it came out, Jaws single-handedly changed the way people saw the ocean. The recurring theme of the unknown is what elevates these films, similar to the belated reveal of the alien in Prey, as the shark wasn’t shown until 1 hour and 21 minutes into the film and has less than 5 minutes of screen time. The less is more approach can do sensationally well.

Life (2017)

Life revolves around a group of scientists aboard the International Space Station who discover a rapidly evolving life form that caused the extinction of Mars and now threatens Earth. The creature, “Calvin”, transforms into a large organism capable of transforming its cells into muscle, neural, and photosensitive cells.

The ability to set traps and have critical thinking, similar to the alien in Prey, that’s the scariest thing. While the monsters in Jaws and Extraterrestrial seem lacking in self-awareness, Calvin and the predatory Yautja had a sentient presence, making the creatures dangerous and intimidating foes.

Predator (1987)

The Jungle Hunter Predator looking for Dutch in Predator (1987)

Fans couldn’t watch Prey without looking at its predecessor, Predator. Marking the alien hunter’s first appearance, he has since become one of the most recognizable movie monsters today.

The species in Predator and Prey are fierce warriors who deeply enjoy the hunt, however, they use technology to their advantage. The creature wears camouflage, making it nearly impossible to see in the dense jungle. Since he is a trophy hunter, he only sees the most aggressive fighters as threats. The construction of the world that has entered into Predator is really impressive. Fortunately, Prey continued this world-building and set the series up for an eventual anthology film series.
